Description
Arthur Drechsler, a former international-level athlete, coach, and judge, offers a lot of knowledge and passion to this book. Is it conceivable that this book was written with too much love and experience? It’s easy to believe so given that the book has almost 400,000 words, yet its breadth of coverage is not a flaw. Here, the evolution and application of the text are questionable. The “encyclopedic” nature of the book merely refers to the extent to which it aims to cover every facet of Olympic-style weightlifting (It does not run through an alphabetized list of concepts and terms.). In their haste to publish a “instant classic” (their words), the editors at A is A neglected to edit Drechsler’s writing (a decent copyeditor should have cut 10,000 words) or narrow his topic (he could have written an encyclopedia and a training guide). The audience segment searching for a reference, on the other hand, must do a lot of digging to get the material they need (the index helps), and those looking for a training manual would be better off going elsewhere. This book is not suitable for the gym. Its volume and bad design turn it into a useless practical tool, and the exercises and approaches are dispersed throughout the text without being well presented. This book still has to be read by everyone who is serious about the sport, despite its shortcomings. This endeavor is driven by Drechsler’s unwavering commitment to completeness. Devoted athletes will discover in Drechsler’s voice a supporter they can appreciate; coaches and strength training specialists will find a force they need to take seriously. — From Unaffiliated Publisher
