One of the most influential figures in the second half of the 20th century who helped to shape the renaissance of American herbalism was Michael Moore. ?
His storytelling skills and sense of comedy were renowned.
After over 40 years working as a researcher, herb merchant and picker, ethnobotanist, doctor, teacher, and writer, he possessed an unsurpassed encyclopedic knowledge of plants.
He supported the use of and knowledge of regional botanicals, supported whole-plant remedies, and exhorted all of his pupils to become skilled herbalists capable of comprehending, identifying, creating, and using their own medicines.
Michael enjoyed teaching others and seeing their excitement when applying what they had learned from him.
His life’s labor has culminated in these courses.
They serve as the audio and video recordings of his final class at the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine in 2006.
Michael Moore wrote a number of influential books on the medicinal plants of the American West and Southwest, including Herbal Materia Medica, which is currently in its fifth edition, and Medicinal Plants of the Desert and Canyon West (MNMP), which is a companion volume to Medicinal Plants of the Mountain West.
Michael Moore founded and served as the director of the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine in Bisbee, Arizona, as well as his first herb shop in Encino, California, which is now known as Herbs Etc. in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
