I did not always know the solutions. CORE Discovery, however, has altered that.

I attended an art school and graduated with a degree in graphic design, just like many of you presumably did. I never learned how to bargain or discuss strategy with clients.

In 2001, when I opened my first digital firm, I knew I wanted it to stand out from the competition. But first, I had several difficulties.

Every aspect of the company required study. I had no notion how to use strategy in the artistic endeavors. During a phone conversation with one of our first clients, I even recall Googling the phrase “strategy.”

You see, we were taught to do the making rather than the strategy in design school. Every time a customer gave us a brief, we would put something together that adhered to the requirements. But nearly every customer would ask us to return to the drawing board repeatedly because what we produced “simply wasn’t there.”

After several cycles, it finally dawned on me that I was ignorant of their own plan.

How was I supposed to comprehend what they needed and wanted? How could I comprehend their issues based just on a piece of paper? I couldn’t without the proper background or inquiries.

Before I started CORE Discovery, such was the case. As I started directing the planning process for customers, the context became quite evident. I got down with them and inquired about the issue they were dealing with right now. The job improved, the relationships got better, and the modifications started to get smaller.

Designers have a tendency to become fixated on aesthetics. I am aware since I’ve done this so frequently.

However, because to CORE Discovery, I can now align clients and stakeholders from the first meeting, gain a comprehensive grasp of their problems, and create a strategy that goes above and beyond their expectations.

I am the product of a mother who was a teacher and a father who was a preacher mixed in with a graphic design education at Art Center College of Design.

I was lucky to have taken a front row seat in the .COM boom working at Razorfish, one of the first digital agencies. There I went from designer to Design Director of the Los Angeles office by the age of 28. In 2001, I left Razorfish to start The Groop – a digital agency that allowed me to work with Al Gore, Jamie Oliver, Thomas Keller of The French Laundry, Alice Waters of Chez Panisse and The Edible School Yard Project and corporate clients such as Scripps, Disney, Myspace and over 30 startups including Causecast and Savings.com.

Today, I bring my 20 years of experience designing software to help companies define new product strategies and optimize their teams. I also share the gospel of UX at The Skool.
