Gregory M. McDermott graduated with a master’s degree in applied finance from Macquarie University’s Centre for Money and Banking in Sydney, Australia, while pursuing a scholarship from Rotary International. He was first exposed to currency trading in 1988 by a Macquarie University professor who also served as the chief of the Australia New Zealand Bank FX Trading Desk. Greg completed a master’s degree in Applied Finance, during which time he studied the foreign exchange market and option trading. He graduated from Saint Joseph’s University with a BS in Financial Management.

Greg was employed in 1991 by the Foreign Currency Options Trading Group of Timber Hill at the Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX). He started off as an XMI Index and Equity Options Clerk on the floor of the American Stock Exchange. He relocated to the New York Mercantile Exchange in early 1992 and began working there as a Crude Oil Options & Futures Clerk on the Floor. In the summer of 1993, he started trading Crude Oil Options after completing the Membership Exam with a flawless score.

In the fall of 1993, Greg was engaged by Rockrimmon Securities, an AMEX Market Marking Firm, to launch a trading division at the PHLX. He was in charge of hiring and training all floor staff, keeping track of the intra-day and inter-day risk profiles of each market maker, and managing the nighttime risk for the PHLX group. Greg was one of the busiest market makers in the country for Dell Computer options in addition to overseeing the firm’s floor trading business. He collaborated with our own Ron Ianieri and traded Dell Computer Options in a group of market makers that increased from 6 to around 100.

Greg’s accomplishments with the PHLX market makers at Rockrimmon Securities paved the way for the creation of an equity options specialist unit. Following a management split, Rockrimmon Securities changed its name to JAS Securities and became a subsidiary of the PHLX options exchange called Gateway Partners.

In late 1999, while still in charge of their PHLX Floor Trading Unit, JAS Securities’ Partners asked Greg to handle an off-floor trading desk. He was in charge of the off-floor personnel and an ISE DTR with certification.

Greg has had a remarkable career in the wholesale mortgage industry since leaving the floor. He most recently served as PNC Bank Home Equity Partners’ national sales manager.

Ron Ianieri, who had previously worked with Greg as a professional trader, strongly encouraged Greg to join Options University in April 2008 as its Chief FX Strategist.
