Writing your book may provide you with years of additional income, increase your rates, lead to more speaking engagements, and instantly establish you as an authority.
A book that you write and have published may alter your entire universe.
Having your book published can: Increase your current and future revenue.
Establishing your expertise will lead to more speaking opportunities, more speaking rates, and more clients.
Donate to others and leave a lasting impact.
Beyond all of that, though, your book truly has the power to alter someone’s life—someone you’ve never ever met.
I’ll never forget the day I received an email from a reader who claimed that one of my books—Do One Thing Different, the one that landed me on Oprah—had really saved her life.
One of the best emotions in the world is receiving a message like that from someone you’ve never met.
You could have wished to create and publish a book but were discouraged by obstacles or fears:
I’m pressed for time.
Who would want to buy my book if I am a nobody?
I have ADD or am unorganized.
I have nothing very original to say.
I have several ideas, but I’m not sure what the subject of my book (or my first book) should be.
The time is not right now. I’ll hold off until I have plenty of time, the appropriate computer, have finished all of my research, am well-versed in my subject, have set up a writing area, the kids have left the house, I’m retired, etc.
I wouldn’t have a clue where to begin.
At first, I allowed some of those things to slow me down or stop me. However, because I had put it off, I became irritated when I had a brilliant idea and then discovered that someone else had written a book about a subject related to it while I was still putting off and “fixing” to prepare.
Or to witness someone else succeed in an area where I felt I could contribute as well, but no one knew who I was since I didn’t have a book published.
Let me share part of my journey toward becoming an author with you.
From Being a Writer and Making an Impact to Being Clueless, Disorganized, and Too Busy to Write
I have tutored over 150 novels from other authors into publication, and I have published 36 of my own books (many after this photo was taken).
My first book took me years to write.
I began as a nobody from Nebraska with no knowledge how to write a book but with a notion that I believed might change anything.
I had four kids at home and a full-time practice, so my life was hectic.
I really had a number of book ideas, but they all remained vague and in my brain. I tend to be rather disorganized and on the ADD side of the spectrum, with many ideas. I didn’t consider myself to be a “natural writer,” and I detested writing.
I had no idea how to write a book, much less how to have it published.
It took me years to create and publish my first book as a result of my ignorance. I lost a lot of time and encountered several dead ends and dead endings.
I continued to write more after that, and eventually over 30 books were published by well-known companies including W.W. Norton, John Wiley and Sons, Harper Collins, Penguin, and others. There have already been 16 translations of my novels. I’ve also done my own print and digital book publishing.
I eventually developed a method for writing more rapidly.
As I developed a strategy for writing more efficiently, the amount of time it took me to complete a book decreased from years to months. These days, I can write a book part-time in a few weeks.
I eventually developed 12 Rapid Writing Techniques that not only helped me write my books faster, but also resulted in better, more marketable novels.
regarded as an authority.
My career path deviated in unexpected ways. Now that I was recognized as an authority, offers to lecture and consult frequently came my way without my having to do any promotion.
Many unanticipated yet wonderful side effects of literary success. Readers have written to me to say that my novels have transformed their lives in ways I never could have anticipated. I was able to assist a lot more individuals than I had been able to when working as a psychotherapist with one person at a time.
Additionally, I received money from book royalties as well as indirectly through an increase in speaking engagements, fees, and sales of goods and services associated with books. In the event that I ever decide to cease actively working, I will have a great supplemental retirement income.
I work fewer hours than I used to, which gives me more time for spending time with my family and taking care of myself (I work out frequently, get enough sleep, play music every day, and read a few books a week).
I’ll assist you since I know how to write and publish a book.
My buddy and coworker Warren Berland was the first person I ever properly mentored. When he was describing a novel therapeutic approach he had developed, I told him: “Warren, you ought to write a book about that!”
He gave me a double-headed stare “Bill, that’s what you do. I wouldn’t have the slightest idea about how to write and publish a book. I have no writing experience.”
“It’s all right, Warren. I’ll assist you since I am well-versed in the process of writing and publishing a book.”
As a result of what I accomplished, Harper Collins published Warren’s book, Out of the Box for Life, with a tens of thousands of dollar advance.
As soon as people started asking me if I could assist them with writing and publishing their books, I started assisting them using the technique I had built. As a result, I have now guided over 150 books into publication from my students and coaching clients. Nowadays, self-publishing is quick and simple for some people, while other people choose to go for a publisher.
Laura Crawshaw was one of my favorite students and coaching clients. She used the method I taught her to write and publish her book, Taming the Abrasive Manager, which is available through Jossey-Bass. Her consulting and coaching clients increased as a result of the publication of her book, which also resulted in international speaking engagements and the creation of coaching institutions in numerous nations where individuals may study her approach to working with challenging CEOs.
Other students and clients have found that via their books, they may make extra money now and in the future, build their expert reputations, start speaking careers or boost their income from speaking, and find fulfillment by spreading their ideas to the world so that they can assist others. More than that, they experience a boost in confidence once they publish books.
In order to help you write your book in months (instead of the years I used to take for my first books) and have it published and sold, I decided to compile all of my expertise from more than 30 years of experience writing, publishing, and coaching others into an online course.
What has prevented you from finishing your book and getting it published?
Overcome Your Obstacles and Fears to Publish This Year I recently came across the following thought: Either you receive the desired outcomes, or you receive the explanations for why you did not. The booby reward is the reasoning.
Over the years, as I’ve coached people who want to write books, I’ve discovered that all too frequently, people are left with an excuse for why they haven’t finished their books. These are the “reasons why not,” in my opinion.
Here are the typical questions I’ve heard and my answers:
(You and everyone else) I’m too busy. As the saying goes, give it to a busy person if you want things done. If you can send five emails every day, you can write the same number of words each day for your book and finish it in a few months.
And to allay your worries, as a bonus, I’ve prepared a mini-course that will help you free up three or more hours per week, more than enough time to complete the course and finish writing your book. Additionally, I’ll share with you the “12 Rapid Writing Methods” that I and my students have used to create books on the side in months as opposed to years.)
I am nothing! Who would want to read or buy my book? (Most authors are first undiscovered. You probably don’t know the writers of many of the books you’ve bought and liked. In this course, I’ll demonstrate how to increase the visibility of your book and yourself. And to help with that, I’ve produced a second extra mini-course on how to establish yourself as an authority and increase your visibility.)
I’m not sure where to begin.
(That is true for whatever new endeavor you take on. Fortunately, I am aware of where to begin and will specifically outline it for you in this course.)
My book might not be marketed well enough.
(I’ll demonstrate how to make your book more marketable without compromising its core ideas or your integrity.)
I have ADD or am unorganized.
(I have learned how to control my impulsivity and disorganization, which has allowed me to finish and publish more than 30 books.) I’ll go over my techniques and exclusive tips for writing swiftly and concentrating on both you and your work.)
I have a ton of ideas, but I’m not sure which one I should write about or whether I even have a book.
(With five book ideas, that is where I began. I’ll demonstrate how to narrow down the multitude of ideas you have, choose the one that will be the quickest, easiest, and best to write, and then organize it into a book.)
The transition from “that won’t work for me” to publication this year
You may have further justifications for not writing your book, but I can assure you that I have heard nearly all of them, and when all the “justifications why not” have been addressed, my students move forward with writing their books. To write and publish your book, you simply need the proper direction and training.
You may believe that this course “won’t work for me” for a variety of reasons. If you allow these excuses to prevent you from enrolling in the course and publishing your book this year, you are depriving yourself and others of the potential benefit of your book.
Right now, you have the opportunity to set yourself up for a life of greater influence, income, and joy. Let’s move through the “why not” and “why it won’t work for me” objections and publish that book. With some work and commitment on your part, as well as the direction, responsibility, structure, and incentive the course will offer, I guarantee you can write and publish your book.
