Description:
A Crucial Front in the 21st Century Opioid Epidemic is Pain Management
The patients we see in our offices on a daily basis are more prone to falling into the risky trap of opioid dependency because they have a history of mental illness and/or substance abuse, both of which are high risk factors for opioid addiction. Doctors and their patients are actively looking for alternatives to opioids to treat pain as reports of addiction and fatalities related to these drugs are on the rise. Behavioral health professionals are uniquely positioned to fight opioid addiction by assisting clients in learning to manage their chronic pain without pills because of our training in the assessment and treatment of mental illnesses and addictions. Many of us, though, believe that we lack the skills and knowledge necessary to handle the very real difficulties involved in treating patients who are suffering from chronic pain.
Dr. Robert Umlauf, who has more than 30 years of experience treating physical pain, will prepare you for working effectively with clients who are either at risk of becoming addicted to opioids or who are already there. The neurophysiological, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral factors involved in the emergence of chronic pain syndrome will be added to your assessment repertoire with his assistance. You’ll discover how to apply particular self-control and behavioral activation techniques that can improve how any client manages pain. In addition, Dr. Umlauf will discuss cutting-edge medical research, complementary therapies, the effects of diet and nutrition, and successful evidence-based treatments. He uses highly interactive, practical lessons to teach various multidisciplinary pain management strategies.
