Session 1: The 5 Basic Principles of Attachment-Focused EMDR

Session 1 lays the groundwork for Attachment-Focused EMDR and details what is needed from you, the EMDR therapist, to repair your client’s attachment wounds.

Session 2: Tapping in Resources

In this session, Dr. Parnell outlines the steps to effectively install the 4 most important resources a client must have to process their traumatic memories. You’ll watch Dr. Parnell uses these steps in an in-session video demonstration with a client.

Session 3: Utilizing Love Resources and Other Attachment Repair Resources

Building on your new resource installation skills and understanding of the four most important attachment repair resources, session 3 covers alternative resources that clients may develop, including creating new parents, utilizing love resources and the right way to use the therapist as a resource.

Session 4: Preparing Clients for EMDR

With resources installed, you and your client are ready to begin EMDR treatment. In this session, you’ll explore the three phases of Attachment-Focused EMDR treatment: assessment and preparation; processing and integration; and creativity, spirituality and integration. You’ll also get valuable techniques to help prepare your clients for treatment.

Session 5: The Modified Protocol

How does an EMDR therapist manage challenging clinical situations? This session gets into strategies and steps to modify the standard EMDR protocol. Through demonstration videos and discussion, you’ll learn the 5 benefits of the modified EMDR protocol and explore how and why you should adapt the standard EMDR protocol for clients with attachment wounds.

Session 6: Successful Target Development

In this session, you’ll master techniques to get through the most challenging parts of EMDR therapy. You’ll get 4 ways to integrate an Attachment-Focus into the desensitization, installation, closure and re-evaluation phases of EMDR, plus you’ll gain valuable strategies to successfully use the bridging technique.

Session 7: Helping Clients with Processing Difficulties and Using Interweaves

Processing difficulties can quickly derail an EMDR session if you aren’t prepared for them. In this session, Dr. Parnell teaches you techniques to help your ‘stuck’ client work through their processing difficulties by:

Working with abreactions
Helping clients who dissociate during EMDR
Working with numbness, sleepiness and memory changing

Through in-session video demonstrations and discussion, Dr. Parnell will teach interweave strategies and show you the right way to close an EMDR session so your clients can fully process their memories and leave the session at peace.

About Author

Dr. Laurel Parnell is an internationally recognized clinical psychologist, author, consultant and EMDR trainer.

She is the author of five books on EMDR, Attachment Focused EMDR

Healing Relational Trauma (W.W. Norton, 2013); A Therapist’s Guide to EMDR, Tools and Techniques for Successful Treatment (W.W. Norton 2006); Tapping In (Sounds True, 2007); Transforming Trauma: EMDR (W.W. Norton 1997); and EMDR in the Treatment of Adults Abused as Children (W.W. Norton 1999). She also authored a book chapter “Postpartum Depression: Helping a New Mother to Bond” in Extending EMDR, and the EMDR Casebook (Manfield, ed. 1998 W.W.Norton 2003). Dr. Parnell has trained thousands of clinicians in EMDR both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Parnell’s dissertation research was on the interpersonal dynamics of battering couples and her post doctoral training was in family violence. She has presented her research findings at several professional conferences and has trained therapists and probation officers. Dr. Parnell also has expertise in the area of transpersonal psychology. She has taught at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco and was core faculty at John F. Kennedy University in the Graduate School for the Study of Human Consciousness, Department of Transpersonal Psychology. She has written and lectured on the subject of EMDR as a Transpersonal Psychology both nationally and internationally. Dr. Parnell’s article Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Spiritual Unfolding (PDF 7MB) published in the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology provides a description of the spiritual experiences many clients have during and after EMDR sessions.

Since 1995, Dr. Parnell has been training therapists in EMDR. She currently teaches through Alliant International University, Omega Institute, Omega at the Crossings, Esalen Institute, The New York Open Center, ID Institut in Kassel Germany and Kripalu Center. Her professional presentations on EMDR include the 1994 American Psychological Association convention, the EMDR International Association Conferences of 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, and 2003, the EMDR European Conference in Rome, Italy and the 1996 Association for Transpersonal Psychology Conference. She presented for many years on EMDR with Adults Sexually Abused as Children, at EMDR Institute Level II trainings.

Dr. Parnell has been interviewed for television, radio, and print on EMDR. Her private practice is in San Rafael, California.
