I was letting my clients down.
I started out like any other trainer in the industry. I was dispensing universal protocols, which were actually adapted from male bodybuilding regimens. I just thought that if a woman did not see results on these programs, she was not adhering to her diet at home.

Ms. Executive had just turned forty. About twelve years younger than Ms. Mom. About fifteen years older than Ms. Retired.
When I worked as a personal trainer in Seattle, I had all of these clients at around the same time. Compared to the young, twenty-something girls I worked with, I really understood their difficulties.
Although I was unaware of the lessons they were teaching at the time, I eventually used the lessons I had learned from them to inspire the creation of a new strategy for dealing with women, which helped me become one of the most prominent female weight loss gurus in the nation.

Ms. Mom was a working mother who was single. She was constantly moving. She has a lovely daughter that she raised on her own. It is unclear to me how she ever found time to exercise, but she valued her health and fitness.
Ms. Retired was married and had children who had moved out. She put a lot of effort into her success and early retirement. In her late forties, she had stayed trim and in shape, but then her fifties and menopause arrived. She claimed that when it happened, her metabolism drastically altered. She put on weight and was unable to shed it.
They had all three struggled with their weight and had tried everything. Between the three of them, they had tried Curves, Zone Diet, Atkin’s Diet, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and many other well-known regimens. Everything failed.
The activities I was engaging in with them in the beginning were ineffective as well. With weight training, they only seemed to get “bulky.” Not bulky in the way that you might imagine, but rather bulky if you were wearing a jacket over a sweater.
While some muscle was being added, no fat was being burned. They would claim that their thighs and arms seemed larger as a result of this.
How Everything Changed
I was always studying and experimenting back then, in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was a good period since I was in medical school, constantly reading studies, and utilizing my patients and myself as test subjects.
I had an idea after reading a number of publications, research studies, and other materials concerning the hormonal variations between acute and chronic stress. What if I worked with my clients harder than I did with them for a longer period of time? What if I combined weightlifting with aerobic exercise instead of only using weights to train them?
Many distinct goal settings inspired this notion. As my studies accelerated, I discovered that I had less time for exercise. I had to make the most of my time as a trainer. Many of my clients missed some of their exercises at the same time. They could show up for our weightlifting session but not the cardio, or the opposite.
As a result, I initially tested this strategy by switching from 60-minute exercises to 30 and 40-minute sessions. Additionally, I used weights in a way that skipped rest breaks and got to training clients right away.
Things started to become clear all of a sudden. My male customers who were attempting to bulk up stalled out. However, my female clients, particularly the time-pressed Ms. Executive and Ms. Mom, noticed effects right away.
Ms. Retired also got improved outcomes, although she still had some difficulties. For ladies like Ms. Retired, I also made a few additional adjustments along the line, but these are outside the purview of this piece.
Even while I would have told you at the time that there is no way this modification could have that effect, there was one other big alteration to all three of these women’s exercises. I learned something new from these three women.
A metabolism that is just right
Are you familiar with the tale of Goldilocks? Just the proper amount—neither too much nor too little? Well, that’s what I found out.
Although this rule applies to all human metabolisms, it is more relevant to the metabolism of women.
pressure to be thinI learned back then that the female metabolism is more responsive to stress, and research now supports this finding. The female metabolism is more sensitive to stress than the male metabolism, which benefits from testosterone.
The hormones estrogen and progesterone, which are necessary for women to achieve and maintain the stunning hourglass shape that is the trademark of the feminine physique, are altered as a result of stress.
Excessive exercise can overwhelm the brain’s stress-sensing processes in women and interfere with a number of hormones, including thyroid, adrenal, estrogen, and progesterone functions.
I was able to lessen some of the stress on the metabolism by cutting the training duration and including cardio and weights, while still providing just the right amount of stimulus to get results.
