Description
“Everyone is a special individual. Therefore, rather than molding a person to fit the Procrustean bed of a fictitious theory of human behavior, psychotherapy should be designed to satisfy the specific requirements of each individual. Milton H. Ericson
American psychiatrist Milton Hyland Erickson specializes in family therapy and medical hypnosis. He served as the first president of the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis and is renowned for his use of hypnosis to access the unconscious mind’s capacity for creativity and problem-solving.
For the most of his life, Dr. Erickson struggled with severe physical disabilities. He developed polio at the age of 17, and his paralysis was so severe that doctors thought he would not survive. His understanding of the importance of nonverbal communication—body language, tone of voice, and how these nonverbal emotions sometimes directly contradicted spoken ones—grew while he recovered in bed, nearly completely paralyzed and unable to speak.
Additionally, he started to develop “body memories” of his own body’s muscle activity. He progressively started to regain control of some bodily parts by focusing on these memories, and finally he was able to speak and move his arms once again. Milton Erickson planned a 1,000-mile canoe voyage after his doctor advised him to solely work out his upper body in order to get the strength needed to go to college. Although he still did not have whole use of his legs at the end of his hard voyage, he was able to walk with a cane.
The career of Dr. Erickson lasted more than 50 years. While a student at the University of Wisconsin and subsequently throughout his medical studies and his first professional posts in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Michigan, he performed significant study on suggestion and hypnosis. Dr. Erickson was well-known in the psychiatric community and well-known for his work in hypnosis by the late 1930s.
Dr. Erickson relocated to Phoenix in 1948 from Michigan. He started a private business in his home office in 1949, mostly due to a need for medical attention at the time. Dr. Erickson was extraordinarily busy despite experiencing nearly continual, severe bodily discomfort and a gradual loss of movement that eventually forced him to spend his latter years in a wheelchair.
The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis was established in 1957 by him and a number of his associates, with Dr. Erickson serving as its inaugural president. Additionally, he founded and oversaw the publication of the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis for several years. Dr. Erickson produced a large number of publications in the 1950s and 1960s, traveled much, gave numerous lectures both at home and abroad, maintained his research, and was in great demand as a practicing psychiatrist. Due to his physical limitations, Dr. Erickson was confined to his house during the 1970s, but he continued to hold practically daily professional development seminars and see some of his patients. His lectures were fully scheduled until the end of 1980 when he passed away on March 25th, at the age of 78, and demand had outpaced availability for the following year. Over 140 research articles and five books on hypnosis that Dr. Erickson co-authored make up his literary legacy.
In many respects, the Ericksonian method differs from conventional hypnosis. Ericksonian hypnosis emphasizes the value of the interactive therapeutic connection and deliberate engagement of the subject’s inner resources and experience life. Conventional conceptions of hypnosis focus on the therapist giving standardized instructions to a passive patient. Dr. Erickson contributed a number of unique ideas and communication patterns to the profession of hypnotherapy, revolutionizing the way it was practiced.
His hypnotic orientation was the source of the cutting-edge psychotherapy techniques that Dr. Erickson used in the treatment of individuals, couples, and families. Even though he was regarded as the best hypnotist in the world, Dr. Erickson employed formal hypnosis in just one-fifth of his clinical practice cases.
Modern psychotherapy underwent a significant change as a result of Dr. Erickson. Many once-extreme aspects of the Ericksonian worldview have now been absorbed into the norm of modern practice.

So what is NLP?
NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Neuro refers to your neurology;
Linguistic refers to language; programming refers to how that neural language functions.
In other words, learning NLP is like learning the language of your own mind!
NLP is the study of excellent communication–both with yourself, and with others.
It was developed by modeling excellent communicators and therapists who got results with their clients.
NLP is a set of tools and techniques, but it is so much more than that.
It is an attitude and a methodology of knowing how to achieve your goals and get results
