Description
In The World Bank and the Gods of Lending, author Steve Berkman explores the World Bank’s loan programs in the developing world. He discovers nothing but mismanagement and hypocrisy: decades of assistance without any discernible improvement in the lives of the poor; billions loaned for improving governance, health care, and education with little to show for it; donor funds given to dysfunctional government institutions or officials with a history of stealing from national treasuries. With sixteen years of experience working for and consulting for the Bank, Berkman provides convincing proof of false reporting and a lack of due diligence as billions of dollars are lost annually on dishonest and poorly thought-out schemes.
Berkman exposes management’s fixation with lending despite the substantial fiduciary risks associated using internal reports and memoranda, project documentation, and the Bank’s Annual Reports as references. He reveals the ease with which money may be taken from the Bank’s portfolio and the extent to which these thefts are disregarded by taking the reader inside multiple project fraud investigations. The World Bank and the Gods of Lending paints a picture of an organization managed by a bloated bureaucracy and suggests adjustments that will awaken the Bank from its bureaucratic complacency and restore its primary objective of eradicating poverty.
Who the Author Is
