Eating disorders are destructive, multifaceted, and complicated. Even the most effective evidence-based therapies now on the market, however, have only modest long-term effects. Ironically, the body—the battlefield itself—might be the final piece in an efficient eating disorder therapy puzzle. A novel therapy approach called Embodied Recovery puts the body itself at the center of the healing process. The ERED model, which is based on the science of Polyvagal Theory, examines how our ability to efficiently consume and digest is influenced by neurological organization, the subjective sense of self, and our fundamental human needs for connection and protection.
In Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Paula Scatoloni, LCSW, CEDS, practices as a psychotherapist, integrative embodiment educator, and Certified Eating Disorders Specialist. She has more than 20 years of experience in the field of eating disorders. Paula spent nine years as the Duke University CAPS’s eating disorder coordinator and has given several lectures on the causes and treatments of eating disorders at conferences, seminars, and professional trainings. She has experience instructing embodied movement programs at rehab facilities and co-creating the first intense outpatient eating disorder program in the United States with Dr. Anita Johnston. The Embodied Recovery Institute and the Embodied Recovery for Eating Disorders methodology were co-created by Paula.
