Mike Tyson dominated boxing in the 1980s and 1990s with his outsized attitude and powerful blows. Even while incarcerated, “Iron Mike” dominated the heavyweight category. Meanwhile, Evander Holyfield, like Ahab patiently waiting to reel in his big whale, endured years of waiting for the opportunity to face Tyson. Though Holyfield won the heavyweight title by knocking out Buster Douglas, the general perception of the mild-mannered Holyfield was that he was a journeyman, the heavyweight champion but never genuinely outstanding. Tyson, who was four years younger, was widely expected to triumph over another wimpy and easily defeated opponent in the final.
