American Kenpo AKKS (American Kenpo Karate System) originated from the Japanese martial art Kosho-Ryu Kenpo that was spread by master James Mitose in Hawaii in 1940. Chinese-born master William Chow who was directly taught by James Mitose and attained Huyen Dai combined with his traditional Chinese martial art Kung Fu to found a new martial art called Kenpo Karate.
The martial art of Kenpo Karate was then passed to Ed Parker (1954) and throughout his life Ed Parker has constantly improved and learned from other Chinese martial arts such as Choy Lee Fut, Hung Gar to perfect the technical system. by American Kenpo.
In 1980, master Jeff Speakman learned Kenpo Karate directly from master Ed Parker, and since then he has devoted much effort to perfecting and bringing American Kenpo to a new level. In this set of 2 DVDs, master Jeff Speakman will introduce us to the latest version of American Kempo in the Jeff Speakman style.
American Kenpo version 5.0 is the hybrid of the last generation version of American Kenpo taught directly from Senior Grand Master Ed Parker to Jeff Speakman and ground fighting brought into the equation by Mr. Speakman’s senior student Trevor Sherman. Mr. Sherman has brought this type of combat back to Kenpo so he and Mr. Speakman could create Kenpo answers to defend against an opponent with these skills in the street.
It is modifying the existing 4.0 system while remaining completely within the combat models and thinking of American Kenpo to address this increasing and prevalent void in the Kenpo world. By keeping within these models of Kenpo we have been able to develop a system combining the best of these two worlds to give our students the maximum ability to deal with the very real possibilities of becoming involved in these kinds of altercations.
In addition it allows us to continue to develop ourselves within the mind-body-spirit paradigm of a true martial spirit to reach a higher level of individual performance and sustained excellence and therefore strengthen the group as a whole.
