The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reports that testosterone levels in American males are dropping at an alarming rate of 1% year. Yet why? In their movie An Emasculating Truth, Casey Neistat and Oscar Boyson set out to find the answer to that question.

In the end, the short film moves past this query to further the ongoing discussion concerning the contemporary concept of masculinity in light of shifting gender roles. Turning the camera on himself and posing the question, “What does it mean to be a guy?” Boyson, the film’s producer and on-camera emcee, came to some very personal conclusions about what it means to be a man today.

Boyson observed that few individuals give masculinity any thought. “To identify a diverse group of people and ask them what being a guy means to them was our aim. We were curious as to why there wasn’t much of a middle ground on this topic.”

The data speaks for itself. Men had an excessive amount of layoffs last year (80 percent to be exact), which caused women to overtake men in the workforce for the first time ever. In higher education, women outnumber males both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with approximately 60% of graduate students being female.

In comparison to females, boys—our future men—drop out of high school at alarmingly high rates (4.9% vs. 3.8%), and they are three times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD. In summary, manhood is in danger or, at the very least, undergoing a substantial metamorphosis as it moves into the new condition of the future.
