Description
Learn to Read Latin is a Latin grammar and reader in one. It provides fundamental Latin morphology and syntax with clear explanations and examples and provides immediate access to famous works of Latin literature even at the very beginning of the language’s study. Beginning pupils become well-prepared for later, more challenging readings as they study basic forms and syntax as well as patterns of Latin word order and other stylistic elements. There are no other textbooks for beginners of Latin that include original manuscripts. The works of writers including Caesar, Cicero, Sallust, Catullus, Vergil, and Ovid are included in Learn to Read Latin; they are chronologically structured and are accompanied with introductions to each author and each work. The fifteen chapters of the book are organized around these readings as the primary training books. There is also a workbook that offers a ton of exercises for each chapter of the text. The tasks in the workbook can be completed in class, as homework, as additional one-on-one practice, or as a tool for at-home study.
This book provides a superb introduction to Latin, much outperforming Wheelock’s Latin and other other texts that emphasize grammar.
University of Virginia professor John F. Miller
