John Hutnyk’s “Bad Marxism”
Cultural Studies frequently presents itself as a radical field of study. This book disagrees with that evaluation. Marx is a favorite among cultural theorists, yet critical thought often seems to slip into simple traps. Bad Marxism provides in-depth analyses of Cultural Studies’ beloved strategies by holding fieldwork, archives, empires, hybrids, and exchange up against the practical criticism of anti-capitalism after an introduction that explains why the “Marxism” of the academy is unrecognisable and largely unrecognised in anti-capitalist struggles. Jacques Derrida, James Clifford, Gayatri Spivak, Georges Bataille, Homi Bhabha, Michael Hardt, and Toni Negri are just a few of the influential writers Hutnyk discusses in his book. He ends by arguing for an open Marxism that is neither dogmatic nor boring, but rather is pro-party and pro-critique.
