American mixed martial artist Erik Paulson, born in 1966, was reared in Minnesota and now calls California home. His victory in Japan’s World Light-Heavy Weight Shooto Title makes him the first American to do so. Beginning with Judo in 1974, Paulson has trained in a variety of sports, including Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali/Eskrima, Sambo (martial art), Catch Wrestling, Shoot Wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He first studied with Rorion, Royce, and Rickson Gracie in 1989 in his garage. Over the course of his 30 years of training, he has studied with 40 different professors.
Due to its quick efficiency, armlocks have long been a key component of the ne-waza (ground game) of Japanese Judo & Jujitsu, Brazilian Jiujitsu, Russian Sambo, and now submission combat and submission wrestling. Joint locks, also known as kansetsu-waza, include armlocks. As the third part of the ground practice kata, armlocks are taught in five different versions in judo.
The straight and reverse armlocks, commonly known in Japanese as the juji-gatame and gaku-juji-gatame, are the major focus of this tape series.
Armbars from the Knees, Basic Attacks from Various Positions, Armbar Attacks from the Guard Position, Arm Catch Grip Breaks, Advanced Straight Armbar Attacks, and Bonus Tape are all included in volume one.
