A breakthrough in creativity or a mental breakdown?
Dr. Al Siebert is a researcher, professor, and author who has survived. He developed an interest in survivor recovery after going through a horrific life-altering incident of his own. He discovered that of the emphasis of his training for entering the mental health profession had been on detecting and treating mental diseases when he was pursuing his PhD in clinical psychology at the University of Michigan. He had not taken a single course or even a single lecture on mental health. That epiphany inspired him to reconsider his outlook on the industry.
Al received a post-doctoral scholarship at the renowned Menninger Foundation, which promoted unconventional thought, as one of just three psychologists in the country. Al was overjoyed.
The idea he was formulating on “how the perception of mental disease is mostly a stress reaction in the observer’s mind” was eventually presented to his professors. Listen to this, though: “They terminated my fellowship after saying that my thoughts were signs of a mental condition. They continued after that. They imprisoned me in the neighborhood VA mental institution on the grounds that my thought process was crazy.”
You can now image how Al was perplexed by this change of events. Al argues that although the Menninger Foundation was known for having excellent psychiatrists, “they couldn’t distinguish the difference between a creative breakthrough and a mental collapse.”
Al tapped deeply into his inner reserves, “What do you do if the powerful reject your ideas and fire you from your position? What should you do if speaking up about how to improve current procedures puts you in danger of being committed to a mental institution? What do you do when others in positions of power circulate untrue information about you? What do you do if the road you’ve been traveling down ends in a precipice and no one is there to save you?”
Al developed ways to carve out a unique niche for himself based on how he handled extreme hardship. His research on survivor resiliency established him as a world authority and assisted many others in transforming their worst moments into their happiest moments.
Al’s top concern was figuring out how to deal with his new situation. He had to learn how to live in a hostile environment. He took a courageous route after his ordeal. He started researching survivors.
Al Siebert started interviewing thousands of people, including those who had survived the World Trade Center and Pentagon terrorist attacks, the Holocaust, the Bataan Death March, being a military prisoner of war, cancer, and ex-prisoners of war. He spent time with some of these folks while they were living so he could comprehend their true reasons and learn their astounding, life-saving mental techniques.
Since then, he has emerged as the world’s foremost expert on resilience. He has identified the vital five resilience levels. The most resilient survivors live by them, even if we all have them to some extent.
Nearly superhuman
Early in the 1990s, 20 years later, Dr. Al Siebert’s remarkable best-selling book The Survivor Personality caused a stir in the psychiatric community. He disclosed that certain people had a confluence of qualities that are practically superhuman. They are able to survive and thrive far better than the normal individual. Al’s essays have been featured in the PhotoReading workshops since 1986 because of his insights on creating improvements (incidentally).
Since the publication of the book ten years ago, Al has shown that anyone can be extremely resilient if they practice the characteristics of the survivor personality. His epiphany was discovering that these characteristics are ingrained in the psyches of everyone, including you.

Al Siebert traveled with his message after creating his resilience protocol. Numerous radio and television programs, from the big ones like Oprah to the little ones like Your Town USA, interviewed him numerous times.
