It exists, and while I don’t use it or support it, you would be foolish to dismiss it or laugh it off. Everyone is thinking about themselves, even in the most polite settings with the biggest smiles. It’s not necessary for power plays to end abruptly to be effective. Insidious forms of intimidation, disguised as velvet gloves and teacups, are sometimes used. Even the author says that.
The information in this book can save your bacon, so take it from someone who has been there, someone who has been the victim of some pretty nefarious power plays and is still not fully recovered. I wish mine had been saved sooner rather than later. I urge everyone to do it.
A 1*Star review states: I was happy to discover that, despite having had their methods lauded in Korda’s book, managers who operated solely on bluster and recrimination could be easily identified. The friend who had given me the book years ago kept losing her jobs and kept yelling, “I am the great and powerful Oz!” without getting anywhere. Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In by Roger Fisher, William L. Ury, and Bruce Patton is a wonderful book that was written for people who enjoy being on this planet and working hard toward a shared victory while exhibiting respect and care for those around them. I discovered the cure to this witch’s brew when I came across it. Take a jaundiced look at it.
