Description
Last year, I wrote about the Microbiome Medicine Summit, which wasn’t really a summit or conference but rather a collection of Raphael Kellman’s interviews with “nutrition specialists” and “microbiome experts” — some of whom were actually real, others not so much — who were eager to believe and report on unfounded claims involving the human microbiome. Jonathan Eisen has given RK the “Overselling the Microbiome” Award.
Last year’s Microbiome Medicine Summit featured a majority of sessions that were heavily promoted to attendees to purchase pricey probiotic drinks, minerals, and self-help books while offering very little research and a lot of information about “nurturing your microorganisms.” What’s more interesting is how little actual microbial specialists or scientists were interviewed.
Some of these talks—the Microbiome Medicine Summit with Deepak Chopra et al., part 2 with Donna Gates, part 3 with Ann Louise Gittleman, part 4 with Joseph Mercola, and part 5 with Larry Dossey—were covered in my blog articles from the previous year.
The Microbiome Medicine Summit made a comeback this year with its second iteration, featuring many new interviews but essentially consisting of the same bizarre mixture of quackery, snake oil, alternative facts, and, of course, links to questionable websites offering goods that purport to treat illnesses. The majority of these interviews were with holistic physicians and dietitians, much like in last year’s collection. Furthermore, Raphael Kellman, who often talks more than the subject being interviewed and never, ever appears to provide a probing question, handled the majority of the interviews. You can find the schedule here.
I undertook the (at times agonizing) chore of listening to numerous of these speeches so that I could discuss their topics with you. With tons of themes like “feed your microorganisms by eating properly,” some of these speeches weren’t too awful, while others were just strange or even harmful. I tweeted about these discussions and gathered the tweets and some of the replies on Storify.
Here are my Storify reports.

More information about Medical:
Medicine is the science and practice of establishing the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
Medicine encompasses a variety of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness.
Contemporary medicine applies biomedical sciences, biomedical research, genetics, and medical technology to diagnose, treat, and prevent injury and disease,
typically through pharmaceuticals or surgery, but also through therapies as diverse as psychotherapy, external splints and traction, medical devices, biologics, and ionizing radiation, amongst others.
Medicine has been around for thousands of years, during most of which it was an art (an area of skill and knowledge) frequently having connections to the religious and
philosophical beliefs of local culture. For example, a medicine man would apply herbs and say prayers for healing, or an ancient philosopher and physician would apply bloodletting according to the theories of humorism.
In recent centuries, since the advent of modern science, most medicine has become a combination of art and science (bth basic and applied, under the umbrella of medical science).
While stitching technique for sutures is an art learned through practice, the knowledge of what happens at the cellular and molecular level in the tissues being stitched arises through science.
