Ludwig von Mises’ The Anticapitalistic Mentality
The renowned economist Ludwig von Mises lays out the reasons for the irrational fear and animosity that many academics and others have towards capitalism in his book The Anti-capitalistic Mentality. He examines the origin of the misconceptions and ensuing concerns that lead to opposition to social and economic change in five condensed chapters. He lists and refutes the economic arguments against capitalism as well as its opponents on the psychological and social fronts. This essay, which was written at the height of twentieth-century socialism, offers the reader clear and convincing insights about how people respond to capitalism.
For the majority of the 20th century, Ludwig von Mises (1881–1973) served as the principal representative of the Austrian School of Economics. At the University of Vienna, he received his PhD in law and economics in 1906. The Austrian Institute for Business Cycle Research was established by Mises in 1926. He worked as an economist for the Vienna Chamber of Commerce from 1909 to 1934. Before the Anschluss, Mises relocated to New York City in 1940 after leaving Geneva in 1934 to work as a lecturer at the Graduate Institute of International Studies. He served as a visiting lecturer at New York University from 1948 until 1969.
Former resident scholar, trustee, and lifelong employee of the Foundation for Economic Education Bettina Bien Greaves. She has done a lot of free market economics-related writing and speaking. Journals including Human Events, Reason, and The Freeman: Ideas on Liberty have published her writings. Greaves, a Mises student, has gained expertise in both the work of the Austrian School of Economics and in particular, that of Mises. She has prepared an annotated bibliography of Mises’s writings, translated many of his monographs, and edited collections of essays by Mises and other Austrian School thinkers.
